Having established that Gmail accounts are actually considered valuable and are being bought and sold – until very recently – for around US$100, I’m going to stop just giving them away. Instead, in true radio fashion, I’m going to – er – give them away.

No, really, I do. I found it last week when doing a Google search on the Chomsky FM (or similar?), after seeing the Eating Media Lunch interview. This blog is one of the nicest surprises I’ve found in a Google results page for some time.

Okay – competition over. Almost nobody played by the rules, and one of the prizes was automatically given away because – well, Bobbie’s my wife and she wanted one.
Nobody really entertained me, except maybe Chris from Germany, who entirely ignored the 25-word limit – much like my year 2 radio commercial writing students who think that when I say “30 seconds is around 75 words”, the ‘around’ bit means “give or take 50”.
Most people decided they would email me directly and just beg.
In the end, the joke was on me. When it came time to allocate the remaining free Gmail account (remember, one had been automatically assigned due to wife priveleges), I learned that I’d been assigned a whole pile more. Apparently it’s tied to user activity – and I send a LOT of email.
The result? Everyone wins. Unless you didn’t give me your current email address (that’s you Devi – sorry).
I’m sure there’ll be more – but my policy remains: I’m not going to send Gmail invites to people unless they specifically ask for them. That’s tantamount to spam, as far as I’m concerned.
I’ll let you know when I get some more…

this gmail thing is bizarre: the accounts just keep on coming. the growth they have endured over the past couple of weeks must have been truly epic, to say the least.

I believe it was god’s intention for me to recieve a Gmail invitation from you, and if I don’t then God will open the doors to our galaxy letting in millions of carnivores who will feast on humans, as a result humans will go extinct, so, I should get one so as to preserve the human race. :-P
