I haven’t been listening to quite so many albums over the past week, though I have been keeping to my one-a-day minimum. There are all sorts of reasons for this that just happened to all coincide with this particular week. Still – my online audio geekery has been more than compensating for my lowered traditional album consumption…
I’ve been setting up a new blog for the research project I’m working on, building online versions of the new semester courses at the university, tidying up the scraps of marking from the end of last semester and getting it together for the start of the new semester. A busy time.
I’ve also been recording internet radio off-air using a fantastic piece of software that I can set to timer-record like a VCR (or, to be more contemporary, a PVR). It’s called Replay Radio and while it took a little bit of fiddling with the soundcard settings, it was worth every cent of the US$29.95.
Replay-Radio will record shows from around the world from any streaming software you care to name – and write to mp3 so you can transfer to your portable device or write to CD.
There was a fantastic show on BBC Radio 4 this week called Radio Rage – but I was teaching while it was on. I was able to set the timer, record it off air, and listen to it on the bus home. Likewise this little gem (I’m such a nerd).
But the main reason I’ve been backing off on the full albums is that most of what what’s been going into my ears have been podcasts.
Judging from a couple of emails and conversations I’ve had recently, I’m not the only one. One friend has shifted to a second, separate iPod just for podcasts. I had intended to finally get around to kicking off the Clayborne podcast – but the folder of mp3 files is on the hard drive of my office computer and I came home without a copy.
Anyway, since it’s the weekend – here’s the jazz show… and I’ve finally graduated beyond the YouSendIt.com phase:
