Just been reading one of The Listener magazines that turned up in the last care package. I’ve been struggling my way through The Black Page, May 20.
In it, Joanne Black writes:
At the Qantas Print Media Awards, which I attended in Auckland last week, mostly for the privelege of spending a night 800km away from my coughing daughter, I talked to the editor of the New Zealand Press Association
This is not an aberration. This is a typical sentence.
Could I please, in this blog, put in a polite request for Ms Black, who is the features editor of The Listener, a current affairs and media magazine in New Zealand, and one of which I am particularly fond and used to buy regularly when I lived in New Zealand, to be less, shall we say ‘parenthetical’, when writing her column, which appears where Steve Braunius used to, and whatever happened to him anyway?

You get Listeners in your care package too? For what it’s worth, I can’t get to Joanne Black’s column either: content and writing style leave me cold. So I’ll second your polite request – and where’s Steve Braunias?
Ha ha. Call that parenthetical? You obviously haven’t been reading my blog.
Joanne Black is a disaster zone, although National Radio’s media pundit Phil Walllington went on record today as liking her. Hmmm.
Like every other publisher (books, mags, web) the Listener needs more great sub-editors. But they are a dying breed.
Braunias went to the Sunday Star Times, where he writes features. He also writes a column along the lines of the Listener’s Page 94 for the glossy SST insert, Sunday. And the editor of Sunday is his gf. Enough?
I too miss Steve Braunias’s writing in The Listener like crazy..He always moved me one way or another whether to anger or welling up of tears or to laughing out loud..He always connected with us…His warm quirky insights into the human condition are missed…
Also why has Joseph Romanos left The Listener as well?..A wonderful sports writer..His analysis of the sports and sportsmen were often like reading poetry..
I remember when Paul Holmes interviewed Pamela Stirling, the current editor of The Listener, he commented that no one he had spoken to had a good word to say about her…She probably fired Steve, Joseph etc because they stood up to her bullying …
