Five minutes with Andrew Cowie

When making media of any kind, one of the problems with interesting people is that quite often, they’re very interesting. And so when you’re trying to do a series of five-minute interviews, sometimes you’ll end up talking to them for much more than that.

My first instinct, because of my radio background, was simply to edit this 18-minute interview down to five. But then I figured that you might actually be interested in hearing the rest.

Besides – the ‘five minutes’ thing was just a device rather than an actual limitation of space or time. If you really want to stop listening after five minutes, you can – and you’ll still have heard a very interesting piece of audio about a very interesting man. However, if that first five minutes makes you want to hear more about Andrew Cowie, there’s more to hear.

I went to see 8 sixteen 32 at the Birmingham Rep Theatre with Bobbie and her mum, who is staying with us on her way back to New Zealand. It was an amazing performance – four Grime artists trying to make it to the big time.

We were there because my friend and former business partner Mark de Clive-Lowe was their Musical Director and Producer, and he had raved about how great these guys were. And he was right to do so. They were just amazing.

Before the performance, as usually happens, there was announcement. No flash photography, no unauthorised filming, and please turn your cellphones off.

“Oh cool,” I thought. “You can take non-flash photos.”

And so I did. But apparently, that was the wrong conclusion to draw.
