Bandcamp du jour: Songs from a Dictaphone – SJD
SJD (Sean James Donnelly) is an old friend of mine from way back. We used to mess around with guitars and keyboards and 4-track cassette recorders in his basement when we were in secondary school together, and we later ended up being in a band together.
Of course – Sean was brilliant and I was rubbish so I stopped and he continued… and he remains to this day one of my favourite pop songwriters on the planet.
This album’s not his most recent one, but it contains what is probably my favourite of all his songs: track 9 – Beautiful Haze (you could watch the video too, if you like). But there’s a handful of other great SJD albums to go through with some incredible gems throughout.
You have to at least hear Superman You’re Crying (here’s the video) from Southern Lights and Baby You’re Oh So from Dayglo Spectres (watch the brilliant ASCII video) – and even then, you’d just be scratching the surface.
Highly recommended.
