Bandcamp du jour: Basho Basho – Kidkanevil
More interesting electronic weirdness – this time, it’s the new album by Kidkanevil.
Trying to describe it is pretty tricky. It’s a forward-thinking collision of different styles and sounds. There’s hip hop in there, it’s dubby and dark in places, straight out of an 8-bit primary colour videogame in others. Daedelus and Aphex Twin spring to mind in parts, and Eno’s ambient music elsewhere.
The Japanese influence is prevalent throughout (Kidkanevil’s hometown, according to the biog, is Tokyorkshire), but there’s something very British – in fact, very London about the whole thing. But it’s the London you get around 3am, after the rain… and several days without sleep.
