I’ve been doing a little more travelling recently. After I got back from Dublin, I went to Groningen in the Netherlands to do a research project with my friends Ard & Lykle from New Music Labs.
I really like Groningen, and I try and get over to the Netherlands as often as I can. This time, I spent a couple of days there working on a project called Tribemonitor. It was funded by a university research initiative called IDEA (which stands for something, but I can’t remember what) and I’ve written up the outcome of that research in two blog posts:

Gijs, Michel, Andreas, Chris and Bart pack the van after an instore gig
Actually, I’ve known the guys from Audiotransparent for a while now. I met them a couple of years back on my first visit to Groningen, and I now have all three of their albums. In fact, I just bought the vinyl of this latest one – Chekhov Guns.
But this was the first time I’d ever seen them play live, which was a real treat. I saw them a couple of times over the past few days and I’d go again.

A bunch of us went out to dinner in between the conference part of the day and the Unconvention showcase gigs. I ended up sitting next to Wotienke (say “Vo – tinker” and you’re close enough).
She’s a Dutch singer-songwriter who performs with Moravian musicians from the Czech Republic, which adds a really interesting flavour to her songs.
So, since my new thing is to ask musicians I meet if they wouldn’t mind a photo and letting me have a track for the blog (assuming I like what they make), I did exactly that.
I promise to get better at the photo bit.

This is Sofie. I met her at UnConvention Groningen and she gave me her CD. She’s the singer for Le Titre, who are starting to make waves here in Holland.
She describes the music as inhabiting a space broadly in the Fiona Apple / Amanda Palmer territory. I asked her if I could play you a track, and she agreed. I may do this more often with musicians I meet.
Some of them are really good.
