Squirrel bike
Say hello to my little friend

Picnic in the park this afternoon. I may have dropped some peanuts. This guy got pretty close as a result. He may actually have eaten his entire bodyweight in peanuts, and was struggling to run away when a small child came running after him to ‘play’.

It might not have been the first time that’s happened either. He’s missing most of his tail, and part of his ear. Evolutionary survival instincts of opportunistic eating and being able to run away at odds here.

Eric & Hinda meet Henry

I went for my usual Saturday morning bike ride this morning, and stopped in Shirley to pick up a few supplies. As I was unlocking Henry, a couple came up and started admiring him.

“That’s a beauty. Do you mind me asking how much it cost?”

After he’d recovered from the shock, we got chatting. Eric and Hinda had been avid cyclists in their youth and had owned a tandem in the 1940s, which they rode everywhere. They were amazed with the similarities between the bike they’d owned and Henry – right down to the same brand of hub gears.

Eric was particularly impressed with the bell. He had a couple of goes with it and it clearly brought back so many happy memories.

Henry’s a few weeks old now, and there are a few things that needed a tweak. He’d forgotten how to go into first gear, and his handlebars had come a bit loose – so after work, I popped down to the bike shop and they very kindly tightened a couple of things, de-squeaked others and just generally gave him a good look over.

Five minutes later he was better than new.
