The crowd goes wild
At the end of a long day of music industry seminars in Edinburgh, there was a long night of bars and bands (7 bands in three venues). Panellists had also been invited to bring some music along and have a turn at DJ-ing at the afterparty.
Only a couple of us had taken them up on the offer. Keith Harris (Stevie Wonder’s manager) had brought half a dozen of his favourite 12″ records and played those. Then I had a turn, intending to just spin a few tunes – and ended up playing (by popular demand, I should add) from 1am till 3am.
I only had my laptop with me, but fortunately, I’d packed some good, crowd-pleasing tunes and it went down really well. I started out with a bunch of 80s post-punk classics (Blondie, Elvis Costello, XTC) and transitioned towards Groove Armada / Daft Punk / LCD Soundsystem territory in the second hour. Even threw in a spot of dubstep right at the last minute.
Towards the end, every song got a cheer from the dancefloor, and it was the first time I’ve ever been asked for an encore by a crowd when DJ-ing. Good sound system, great bunch of people and a whole lot of dancefloor fillers.
That was a lot of fun.
