Pop star George Michael is abandoning the music business to release his songs online for free instead. The multi-millionaire singer said he will never make another album for sale in record shops because he does not need the cash and does not enjoy fame.
So one of the world’s biggest-selling recording artists takes the plunge and goes ‘sod the money – I’m going to release my own stuff free’. Fair enough: he’ll own the recording, and he’ll own the compositions. He can give them away all he wants.
The question is – will commercial radio programmers, such as John Budge and Rodger Clamp, download them and play them on air (in other words, actively seek music their target audience will no doubt enjoy) – or will they still stick exclusively to whatever they get sent by the major labels?
