A heads up: I’ll be saying more – possibly quite a bit more – about this on the actual day (next Tuesday), but have a read of this website: Grey Tuesday is a campaign to support DJ/producer Dangermouse’s ‘The Grey Album‘, which mixes Jaz-Z’s ‘The Black Album‘ with The Beatles’ ‘The White Album‘.
Legitimate art or piracy? Well, strictly speaking, it’s both – but it’s only piracy because both the law and EMI are wrong. Grey Tuesday is a campaign to protest narrow and self-interested interpretations of copyright law that limit and erode creativity, thereby destroying the very industry the major labels should be supporting and depend upon for their livelihood.
The free weblog account I have with Blogger prevents me from hosting the album on my own site, but I 100% support those who choose to do so in this case. I am not pro-piracy, and nor do I believe that intellectual property theft is excusable. The issue is complex – but easily resolvable with a little common sense. I’ll say more on Tuesday.
This is important stuff and what I’ve heard of the album so far, this could well be the catalyst for major change in the draconian, outdated and myopic copyright laws the major labels have been slowly strangling themselves and their own artists with for the last few years.
This could, in fact, already be the most important record of the decade – and you can’t buy it. Far be it from me to encourage you to break the law but… oh what the hell. I encourage you to break the law. Download this album.
Unjust law. Victimless crime. Civil disobedience. Go for it.
PS: Incidentally – Ashley died peacefully and quickly at 9.45am. I cried.
