The sun is out, it’s Friday, and I’m in a good mood. And nothing does a good mood for me like Aussie band Spiderbait — especially when Janet’s on lead vocals.
Spiderbait are a loud, tight powerpop band that just kick out great song after great song.
If there was one pop band whose greatest hits record was worth picking up, it would be them. Two vocalists take turns up front. Kram’s pretty great, but Janet seems to get all the best songs, if you ask me.
Stevie and Glockenpop are both ‘stick-in-your-head-forever’ tunes, and they’re both hers.
If you spend your money on going to see obviously b-grade movie rip-offs of 70s TV shows and Marvel comics, then you might remember their version of Black Betty (with Kram up front — and actually, it’s pretty great) from the Dukes of Hazzard soundtrack, and their cover of Ghost Riders in the Sky for the recent unfortunate Nicholas Cage film.
Their spelling leaves a little to be desired. ‘All right’ is two words in my book – and Fuckin’ has an i and an apostrophe in it.
But when you turn it up loud, you can overlook such sub-editing oversights.
Incidentally, I’m going to talk about this website on Kim Hill’s programme on Saturday morning (NZ time) and then I’m off to London for a couple of days to visit my sister’s family and say ‘Ooh’ and ‘Aah’ at the new baby.
