An exhibition opens this evening at the Custard Factory – in the shiny new bit that’s been refurbished (and is actually looking pretty amazing). The exhibition’s called Fight the Power – and it’s well worth a look.
Ammo from Punch Records walked me through it this morning, and I took this video. It’s no substitute for going there yourself and looking through the work (and messing with it – more on which shortly).
It’s fascinating stuff – and as I’ve mentioned, one of the reasons I’m really interested in this is because I’m working with Punch to explore theories about the internet and digital culture as it relates to the work that they do. This blog post is part of that.
They’re calling this a “Remixhibition”. That is to say, you can move stuff around, interact with it and so on. My job is to extend that out into the wider world via the web, where remixing naturally takes place.
So I’m thinking a lot about how to take that content, make it available – and more importantly, have people take it and re-use it, recontextualise it and remix it.
You should take this as a sign…
I won’t bore you with the details of the theory here. There’s another place for that – but the message here is that you should feel free to grab this stuff and use it as a springboard into making your own stuff – or just comment, respond, get involved, etc.
There are no rules here.
