RIAA says sales are down. Soundscan says “Wha..?” Who should you believe?

A fascinating article in which it turns out that these “losses” claimed by major labels due to piracy are actually large increases in profit. It all comes down to how you measure it – and the record labels aren’t measuring it in terms of actual money, but in terms of how sloppy their businesses aren’t being any more.

From this, you can argue that a 10% increase in profits is largely attributable to file sharing. It would be nonsense, but no more so than attributing a fictitious loss to the same factor…
