It’s been a busy few weeks, but I think I’m emerging from under the big projects so that I can start picking at the little bits and pieces that I have to do, as well as pick up some of the threads that lead to larger and more interesting tasks.
After the completion and submission of the draft manuscript for the book I’ve been working on, I gave myself the weekend off. The idea was that on Monday, I would sit down and plough through the mounting pile of paper and backlog of email that awaited me in my office.
I arrived, made myself a cup of coffee and began digging. The plan, you see, was to gather everything together into a master inbox list. That’s step one. Step two is to sort through the pile one item at a time and place it into one of the following categories:
File it
Defer it
Delegate it
Do it
And then once I had my organisation in place, I could move on to step three, which was to actually do something about each of the tasks in order of urgency and/or importance.
It’s now half past four in the afternoon, and I have completed step one: put everything in a pile.
On the plus side, though, my iPod now has the whole of Wikipedia on it.
