I haven’t done a Dubber’s Sunday Jazz Spotify playlist for a while, and hadn’t given the matter much thought either. So it was nice when I received a request for one via Twitter from my friend Dave.
He specifically asked for stuff that swings and has great drum and trumpet solos. Nothing too obscure… “classics and standards that make you want to be a jazz drummer”.
Here’s how I’ve interpreted the brief – but thrown in a couple of my own favourites for good measure.
The Bola Sete live piece is one of the most incredible pieces of music I’ve ever heard – and that last track by Universal Quartet, featuring Yusef Lateef, is from my favourite jazz record of last year. It’s new to Spotify, but I was lucky enough to see that band live at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival – and it was, by far, the single best concert I’ve ever been to.
