Not strictly radio-related, although I did work with Sir Rob for a time at Radio Pacific in the early 1990s. He used to do a chat show – mostly about his lilies. Perhaps the only former head of state ever to have their own weekly talkback show… which is kind of odd, because he was pretty unpleasant at the best of times.
I spoke with him on the Sunday before he died. I can’t remember what we talked about, but it wasn’t anything particularly meaningful.
Probably just “Where’s the toilet key?” “Over there… on the hook.”
But still… y’know?
I’m going to go and see this show on Monday.
