There’s a story in the Herald today about Low Power FM broadcasting in Auckland. They spent a long time preparing for it, and I was first contacted by Alan Perrott a good couple of months back.

Later, another reporter rang me for more facts. They had both read my weblog posts about LPFM and had been pretty thorough about following up leads, etc. I even got to be the pullquote:

“Last time I counted there were over 60 radio stations in Auckland, which is just absurd.”

Then they got to work on the graphic. A radio tuner that displayed all the different frequencies available in the Auckland market.

They got the info off this very weblog. How can I tell? It was wrong information.

I’d left some stuff on the sidebar of my blog long after it was redundant. Frequencies for Tourism FM at 100.4 and 100.8 were long gone. Jochen Siegenthaler from BCL was kind enough to point the error out to me weeks ago.

“Yeah, yeah…” I thought. “I’ll get to it. No hurry…”

Well, the Herald got to it first. Good on them for checking their facts with an independent external source. Shame on that external source (me) for supplying bad information. I’ll try and keep that sidebar up to date from now on.

Also – “over 60” was a bit of an exaggeration on my part. It’s probably more like 58 or 59 – though I know a few people who are busy plotting new stations as I type…
