The day I quit NZ Radio

Today I quit as owner/moderator of the NZ Radio email discussion list after three years. Here’s my final posting.

A few people asked me if my “toying with the idea of shutting down NZ Radio” was a cunning ploy to get people talking on the list. If that had been the case, it would have been a clever move, because that’s precisely what’s happened in the last few days.

However, that’s not the case – and the more I thought about it, the more it made sense to walk away from the list – or at least stop being the one whose job it was to try and keep it seemly and topical.

I’m not shutting it down – I’m shutting me down instead. On the 29th of July, 1999 I started NZ Radio. This afternoon, three and a bit years later,

I relinquished control of it.

For the price of a long black at Atomic Coffee on Ponsonby Road, I “sold” NZ Radio to Median Strip (I bought the biscotti, but then that was fair since I ate most of it).

As of tomorrow, it will be in the capable hands of editor Paul Kennedy. He knows more than me about what’s going on in the industry (for some reason, people tell him stuff they don’t tell me) and what’s more, he’s all refreshed and bushy-tailed from a five-week European vacation.

I am going to remain on the list as a civilian, and post my opinions when I think they’re valid – and Paul will be able to censor my thoughts as they go to the list.

However, as I’ve indicated before, if people want to know what I think, they can go to my weblog: http://dubbernews.blogspot.com (updated at least once a day) – and if they don’t, then I won’t bore them with it here (well, less so than usual anyway).

There are a lot of things that have prompted this decision – but the main one has been a need to focus on my thesis.

Unlike me, Paul has a computer at home – and so the postings to the list are likely to be approved more quickly outside of working hours. So that’s a bonus too. It’s also extremely likely that with all of Median Strip’s industry contacts, this list will become a whole lot more useful as more and more people start joining.

Not that I’m really going anywhere, but I do want to thank the people who have made this an interesting ride over the past 3 years. This list has been far more the centre of my world than I should have allowed it to become – but that’s only because you all make it so fascinating.

And that, friends, was my final posting as moderator of NZ Radio.
