'Brushes' is a fantastic drawing app. It takes the concept of fingerpainting and gives you a toolset that can produce some absolutely stunning artwork.
Totally get your point from an iPad marketing perspective (and from a Makers' Manifesto perspective) - but what Apple did with it is make a platform for development.

It's not the basis on which they're selling it to the masses, but that doesn't change the fact that most of the things you'll ever use on an iPad were developed out in the wild by third party developers. They get to be creative first, then everyone else can be.

"One of the criticisms of the iPad as a device is that it assumes the user is a passive consumer."
I think this is more a criticism of Apple's current implementation of the iPad along with their dissatisfaction over Apple's perceived drift towards control and closed/proprietary, rather than people dismissing the tablet form as necessarily passive.
I think people feel intuitively that a touch interface could transform the way we understand what a computer is and are disappointed with what they see right now which to them seems like a giant iPhone.
That huge screen extends the sense of touch to allow us to manipulate a device that previously we understood as an entity that was separate from us. A thing of primarily visually experience.
A tablet could be the opposite of a passive consumption/TV style device. You watch the TV broadcast at you, but with this you manipulate it by touch/feeling.
So people are like — "this thing could be SO much... and you did THIS with it?"

Robert Scoble had an article a while back about how the iPad is changing art and music. http://scobleizer.com/2010/05/22/how-the-ipad-is-changing-art-and-music/
There's also an iPad app that emulates instruments in an orchestra.
