Think Twice – Aotearoa All Stars

I missed this when it came out a year or two back, but I just found it on the superb NZ On Screen site and I think it’s kind of remarkable. It’s a public service anti-crime song featuring popular New Zealand artists, that miraculously comes off without being utterly cringeworthy in the way that so many of these things are.

These guys are the absolute royalty of New Zealand hip hop – Che Fu, Scribe, P-Money, Savage, Mareko – guys with some genuine cred doing what essentially amounts to a “don’t do murders, kids” community police promo – and yet it still manages to be cool.

Not sure whether the question is “How did they pull off this incredible feat?” or “How come everyone else makes such a complete, embarrassing hash of this sort of thing?”
