First day back at work today, and I started by gathering together a group of music industry professionals to ask them about what it is they actually do for a living. It’s research.
You see, there’s lots of talk about “the music industry” and what they do and think. But there seems to be very little understanding of how people in that industry spend their time or make their money. We make assumptions about major record labels and bands – but that’s not most music industry workers.
I brought together a dance music promoter, a composer and musician, a festival organiser, a record producer, a singer of devotional music, an international tour promoter, a label manager and a musician/educator, then fed them sandwiches and asked them lots of questions for three hours.
Questions such as… “If you were your own union rep, what would be the most pressing concerns you’d have about your current working conditions?”
And that’s what I do for a living.

It seems you need to wear a black jacket if you’re in the music industry. And you hang out with like-minded black jacket people. So the double-breasted people all hang out on the left-hand side of photos, the single-breasted people on the right.
interesting stuff… we are working on defining the needs of creative industry members here at Moseley Exchange and it would be great to learn more about your findings please?
