Jake and John perform folk tunes to an appreciative room
Jake and his friend John signed up for an open mic evening in town. One of those things where most of the people there knew most of the people there.
For the most part, it wasn’t really my cup of tea, and there were some quite diverse levels of talent on display, but everyone was having a good time. Well, everyone apart from Clutch who had to step outside once or twice.
Don’t get me wrong – I love that this sort of thing goes on. It’s culture. It has meaning for people. It’s enjoyable for the participants and is a great way of sharing time with friends. But it’s not my first choice of entertainment as a punter off the street.
At any rate, all parental bias aside – Jake and John were the best thing on the bill by a country mile.
Better than the man with the out of tune guitar playing Tonight Tonight by the Smashing Pumpkins. Better than the man who played an acoustic version of a Depeche Mode song on the piano. Better, even, than the aging group with acoustic guitar, tea-chest bass and female vocalist doing Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus.
And I’m not just saying that: Jake and John were really good. Two songs, toward the end of the evening, performed well. Really glad I went.
