Postcard from Chicago: The Bean

It’s a giant mirror bean. What’s not to like?

One of the most touristy attractions in all of Chicago is the Cloud Gate. It’s a giant bean-shaped thing, looks just-polished, and reflects the city’s skyline. David, who was showing me around, was not impressed.

“It’s a colossal waste of money.”

Perhaps. But it’s hugely impressive all the same. One of those things that makes you have debates about what the role of public art is, why such things are important – and what constitutes art anyway. On that level, it does its job.

Plus: shiny.

Who has to clean that? A few cans of Mr Sheen needed.

It’s better than Liverpool’s ‘Banana Lamb’.

  2. I’m bummed; I came home to a Netflix documentary about green design (Design e2), and one of the segments was all about Chicago – including the bean.

Had I known, I would’ve loved to have seen this, and the green roof on City Hall.
