Postcard 2: Lunch with Boffins

Lunch at Crib
A ‘greasy spoon’ diner in a seedy part of Dunedin

Had a lovely lunch on day 1 of the Dunedin conference with a couple of IT specialists from the University. Andrew Long (right, in the glasses) is a long-time reader of this blog and New Music Strategies, and decided to attend the conference and introduce himself when he heard I’d be in town.

We went out to lunch with his friend Chris Edwards, a fellow computer boffin and under-rated & undiscovered musician, at a place called The Crib, a quaint South Island term meaning ‘bach‘. The food was excellent. I had a tuna salad and a Bundaberg ginger beer – a drink which, among others, I had missed terribly without realising it.

Andrew’s also something of a blogger. He runs the Social Space Station. We debated the appropriate netiquette of two bloggers meeting each other and writing about the meeting. Would using the same photo be a faux-pas? Could we be upfront if we didn’t like the person?

As it turns out, it’s not a problem. Andrew’s smart, interesting and wickedly funny, which is kind of the perfect combination for relative strangers that you meet for the first time ever on the far side of the planet, and then go out to lunch with and talk about other mutual close, personal acquaintances that you’ve never actually met either.

Having a wonderful time, wish you were here.

Right now:

"@ConorFitzhenry Thanks. Looks like I'll have German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Finnish and Estonian ready to go by Monday."

  1. Hey. There’s no such thing as a seedy part of Dunedin, unless it’s gone waaaaay downhill in the last 10 years!
    Wish I was there!

Nope. If anything, it’s been beautified, from what I hear. Loved Dunedin to bits. There is no seedy. I was trying irony, but I should refrain.

Loving the blog, by the way Jez… when can I come and play records for you again?

Thanks for the kind and highly debatable opinion in this post (which, BTW, I’m happy to oblige in again sometime). Geez, now I have to finish that tumblelog on international-blogging-hookups actually working out.

The tattoo looks the shiz and man that guy is really good!

  4. The tat is looking fantastic, had mine done in Lake Taupo by a madman who had just been dumped by his wife for his mate the night before. He wasn’t in a good mood! Keep going with the irony, it’s good for the mind. I’m thinking off perhaps a more jazz type night with live music as well or events (not really thought this through) something that we can build a dedicated crowd for. Also, and again I’ve not thought this through, some sort of offshoot night from Music Strategies, I dunno we’ll catch up when you’re back!
    Speak soon
