After reading your (useful) last two posts, I'm left wondering if you can advise how best to handle all the stray tracks in my collection – songs which aren't from an album. In coverflow view these butt into my otherwise beautifully flowing album artworks with the ugly label "Unknown Album", generally also without album art. Aside from omitting them from iTunes altogether, can you suggest a way to tidy up this niggle?

David Sondrsen (NZ)

Welcome back Andrew...
I did a similar thing little while back..logical groupings. All house, techno, disco and post 1980 funk is simply under Disco, as thats what it is, in its myriad forms...electronic and strange German groups fit in there quite nicely too

Similarly I have pop (rock, pop, alt, punk etc), soul (older funk, gospel, reggae, dub, downbeat, acid jazz, r'n'b) and Jazz (jazz, world and the like). I haven't figured out country yet....

Works for me...

A few years ago I got sick of all the genres I'd made up to classify my music.
It's a clash of Taxonomies, you private identification vs rest of the world. Think user tagging vs groups on Flickr. You might think that Dylan is Folk, but to be accepted in the Pop & Rock group he would have to meet certain "rules" defined by the rest of the pop & rock group.

iTunes also has a grouping column, I belive it's hidden by default but it might give a bit more room to add extra classification.
