Kiwi kids making their own media

October 20, 2005 – 10:35 am

KPE is my new favourite podcast. I’ve known about it for about an hour, and already I’ve gone through and listened to them all. It’s the project of a bunch of kids at Pt. England School who talk about books by New Zealand authors.

From the website:

Pt England Primary School in Auckland, New Zealand, has an enthusiastic group of students producing a weekly podcast they call KPE – Korero Pt England.

The producers of this podcast are aged from 9 -11 years. They are working with their teachers on a project promoting reading in their classrooms. They are reading lots of books written by New Zealand authors. Their podcasts are an opportunity to let people know about these books and about life in New Zealand.

You can subscribe to the podcast in iTunes. And you should really go visit their website. While you’re at it, why not drop them a note and give them a bit of encouragement too?

They’re all great – but Kim Hill better watch her back: that Anahera’s going to be a radio star.

The best bit though – that theme tune. Just superb.

This makes me so happy.

Gave (and still gives) me the warm fuzzies.
    Isn’t this what being a New Zealander’s all about…?

You’re preaching to the converted here. This is exactly the kind of territory that KidsNet was supposed to cover (oh my God – three years ago! Really?!!).

UPDATE: Turns out the Washington Post ran a lengthy article on exactly this sort of thing just yesterday.

Thanks to Roger from Slapcast for the heads up.

We’re just launching a new resource for UK kids to make their own radio programmes. It’s called Internet Radio for Schools and it’s part of the BT Education programme – all FREE to kids, teachers and parents. It’s all about helping kids improve their communication skills and giving them a voice – something that we feel is missing from the UK education system. Would love to hear what others think. Have a look at the resource: http://www.bteducation.org/resources/view.ikml?id=176
